    How to Choose a Topic for your Website

    When getting into almost any type of online business you will need to choose a topic for your website, you will face the dilemma of passion or profits: do you pick a website topic because of the potential for making money from it, or because you like it?

    Passion vs. profits

    If your goal is maximum profitability and you will operate a website that is dependent on advertising, especially Google Adsense then your first step would be to do research to see which industry spends the most money per click on online advertising. A good metric to use is to see which Google Adwords triggered keywords pay out the most per click and tie your niche to that industry. You could also use a tool such as Wordtracker to see keyword demand or volume and to build your content or categories around those keywords.

    In Yaro Starak’s first edition of his “Blog Profits Blueprint” he suggests two scenarios on the Passion vs. Profits debate:

    1. If you do focus on maximum profitability, then Yaro suggests you find the niches that people spend money in and that are currently not serviced well by other blogs.

    2. On the passion side of things Yaro suggests that if you focus on passion, things you personally enjoy and know about, creating good content will be easy and your motivation will be strong.

    But will it be viable when you’re in a much loved but unprofitable niche? If not, how long will your passion last for your website or how long will your passion last for you creating a website about your passion when you making no money?

    Also, how will you attract the hordes of traffic (and clicks) to your unprofitable niche to make it viable to add pay per click advertising such as Google Adsense?

    Lying and saying you saw Bigfoot in the Andes Mountains might generate interest and traffic for a while but it will soon die down when people realize you’re not truthful and could harm the reputation of your website about Everything Bigfoot.

    Websites are normally successful because their owners are well versed in the subject the site is about. If you are going after profits you will have to constantly write about and even field questions (or comments) about a subject you don’t particularly like but is positioned in a lucrative niche.

    With regards to choosing a niche for your blog this is what Jerry Lucado had to say:

    Blogging about something you are NOT interested in is very trying, even if that is what you’ve decided to try and make money with.
    Blogging about something you have a passion for may make you very poor.
    The trick is to become passionate with the former and learn how to monetize the latter.
    Both are easier said than done.

    I agree with him as I have experienced it before.

    In his updated 2016 Blog Profits Blueprint Yaro Starak suggests that you “find the sweet spot, the convergence between something that you care enough about to get really good at AND other people spend money on.”

    In a nutshell here is his advice for choosing a niche for your website:

    • Don’t try to find a niche with no competition so you can be first to market. While being first in a popular subject is an advantage, the internet has evolved to the point that it’s very rare to find a money-making subject that doesn’t already have people in it.

    • Competition is a sign of potential. When other people are operating in a market and they are making good money that means you have the potential to do the same. What you need to do is find a popular, proven money-making subject, and then be first with your unique methods and ideas about that subject.

    • Find the slice, the segment within a market you can own. Go after hungry audiences with a unique solution that only you can provide. Your solution doesn’t have to actually be truly original (original ideas are rare), but you have to frame it as unique, to position it against everyone else in the market. Your content is unique, your style and voice are unique – YOU are unique – and that can be the unique aspect of your solution.
